Rigging up for snapper And choosing the rigs

I  believe in early Snapper season in Melbourne. Although the reds don't feed as much while the water temperature is still low, I have found that smaller baits can be the key to your success in  those earlier months (September and October). In Victoria the maximum amount of rods you can use at one time is 4. On the spread I will rig 2 snapper snatchers and 2 traditional snelled hooks. When I fish for Snapper I always fish with atleast 1 snatcher rig in combination with my sounder  to gage if I am in the right area. For example, if I am catching lots of Flathead on the snatcher flasher fly rig I tend to pull up the anchor, turn on the sounder and leave as I believe if the flathead are on the bite, I am in the wrong fishing spot as I have personally noticed the flathead shut down when the Snapper are in the area. So I will use the sounder to look elsewhere for the Snapper.

In November when the school fish move in, I use snapper snatchers because I find they are easy to drop straight down and are much easier to bait up. When your burley up with pilchard chunks, the same sized chunks are what I use on the Snapper snatchers so I find it saves time when the snapper are going ballistic.
Whatever rigs you use when fishing, I highly recommend you have atleast one flasher rig (snapper snatcher) on your spread as it will improve your chances of catching Snapper. 

These rigs also work well on Gummy sharks and other reef species, they are an awesome rig to catch most fish with.

This rig is used for offshore fishing in bays, lakes and even rivers. You can catch many species on the rig if you use the small 1/0 hook size. The rig is suitable for many fishing scenarios e.g bream fishing or whiting.

My favourite would be fishing for salmon in the surf with the 1/0 hooks . 4/0 hook size and up can be fished pretty much anywhere, including offshore, deep sea or just plucking snapper. Many Mulloway have been caught from the surf using these rigs, as the flasher works as a lure in the waves, being washed around enticing the fish to chase it.

Also whilst surf fishing I have caught more Salmon then I can remember and half the time they don't have bait on them, that's how good they work in the surf.

We personally used and tested the rigs in Melbourne Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, but we have had excellent feedback from   Brisbane's Morten Bay, and we have also had many fishing reports from Sydney Snapper scene on the New South Wales coastline. Shark Bay has reported some great Snapper catches over in the west. We have sold many to Northern Territory, and down in Tasmania they are selling aswell.  There has also been good reports from Western Port, Victoria and Adelaide's St. Vincent's Gulf, South Australia. Our charter friends have been catching reds on the pink sunrise and live pilchard models.

we have caught many snapper on these rigs last year. we recommend using at least one of our snapper rigs , in conjunction with a standard port Phillip bay snelled double hook type rig  and at different times of the season we will use  at least  one snapper snatcher and some times more flasher rigs to catch that Melbourne port phillip bay snapper .

I  believe early season Melbourne reds don't feed as much and smaller baits can be the key to your success in  those early months September and October  , i also use the rig to gauge  if i in the right area's for instants if i catching lots of Flathead on the flasher rig , I tend to pull up the anchor and turn on the sounder and leave , because i  believe if the flathead are on the chew , i m in the wrong fishing spot and the snapper are not in the area. In November when the school fish are on the bite i use  this rig when  your getting a red hot bite  because they are just easy to drop straight down .

Finding a Snapper There are two great ways to find a snapper. The first is simple and has been done since the ages. Know the usual areas where the snappers are found, anchor up, spread out the bait and wait! If you're fishing at Port Phillip and Western Port, where there are a plenty of fish for you to catch, this method works perfectly. But there's another way to do it. This involves use of  electronics such as the sounder. This method gives you a better idea of where the fish are, and saves your time by also telling you where they're not. But you shall need to educate yourself about the basics of how a sounder works – learn how to interpret a sonar image, for instance. Sounding up for a Snapper Where do you look for a snapper? Everywhere!! Always keep your sounder turned on, as you never know where the fish might turn up. Often you find them were you're least expecting. But generally the fish may be found in shell banks, open mud, structure marks, reef   and scallop beds. Always keep in mind that you may well be driving over the fish. Do lures work on the snapper? Of course, they do. The snapper will have a right go at any food that appears in front of it. So bait fish are quite effective in catching the snapper and lures do work. The Best Bait and Berley Well, the bait is most effective if it's fresh. Fresh squid work great and you may have them frozen after catching them, so that they remain fresh. But nothing beats catching them live and using them immediately.For a berley trail, there's nothing better than a block of pilchards that are cubed up and applied well. Don’t even touch the rod until there is a strong, sustained bend in the rod and/or line is pouring from the reel. It’s a hard habit to break, but it’s important. The Right Time to Fish

The best time to fish in early spring is at the first and the last light, as the bite times are quite short. The bite time increases and the fish become faster as the season progresses, and you may even try your luck in the middle of the day.

This season they are already a huge hit in Port Phillip Bay, Western Port, Lakes Entrance and Gippsland in Victoria. South Australia’s St Vincent Gulf and Metro Adelaide, Shark Bay in Western Australia, Sydney Coast line and Tweed Heads New South Wales and Brisbane Coast line, the list goes on and on. If you’re fishing for reds with your maximum rods, it’s worth making sure at least some of them are rigged with a Snapper Snatcher for a bit of variety. No matter whether you’re fishing from the shore or a boat, it is best to jazz up your Snapper Snatcher hooks with a small piece of bait. A strip of pilchard is ideal, especially in the surf. Pass the hook through the squid strip just once, towards one end of the strip, just as you would for normal circle hooks. Small fish fillets or pieces of cut up baitfish can also be used with Snapper Snatchers. When baiting up, it is essential to ensure the gape of the hook is not obscured with too much bait and the hook point is well clear of the bait. Once you have your Snapper Snatcher rigged, baited and in the water, do nothing! The circle hooks, are designed to hook the fish in the corner of the mouth as it takes the bait and moves away. Striking at bites will only pull the hooks from the red’s mouth, so it is imperative not to strike. If holding the rod while surf fishing, don’t start fighting the fish until you’re sure the fish is well hooked. If boat fishing, put the rod in a rod holder, low to the water, then sit back and wait for the fish to hook themselves. Don’t even touch the rod until there is a strong, sustained bend in the rod and/or line is pouring from the reel. It’s a hard habit to break, but it’s important. A great way to fish for snapper with Reedys rig’s is directly to the bottom, beneath the boat. Presumably the rocking of the boat gives the rigs some up and down action, which attracts the fish.
