fishing for snapper pinkys on hardbodies lures

While lipless crankbaits have been around for years, I’d always considered these lures to be pretty much exclusively used for bass. It took a year or two of organising but I finally made it up to port phillip bay, along with good buddies ty and peter, to spend a bit of on-water .

A couple of sessions fishing the reef systems in port phillp bay revealed some interesting developments in the whole catching snapper on artificials story. The technique the is not dissimilar to that used when plasticking. Basically you need to find suitable ground reef edges with fringing gravel beds, drop-off and bommies or if its snapper season use your sounder to sound out them up and present the lure in a way that appeals to the predatory instincts of the snapper.

My experience with reds is that while they obviously feed on crustaceans and other bait items in and around the reef, they also keep an eye out for any food items coming down from above.

Like bream will shadow tailor schools in an estuary.Starting a berligh trail and waiting for it to float down to them helps put them in a frenzy I have had times where lures have out fished bait . snapper do the same in a reef environment.

Look at the basic profile of a lipless crankbait like the Jackall tn or similar lures like Rapala’s Clackin Rap and you’ll note that they are designed to sink with a slight downward bias at the head. This is my way of thinking anyway, Weighted with the jighead, a jerk shad should sink pretty much horizontally with the head section, which is weighed down by the jighead, providing momentum and, depending on the shape of the head, even a bit of subtle action.

Both lure styles are highly realistic with the lipless crankbaits having the added bonus of reflective colours and noise in the form of rattles. There’s no doubt that these lures work on snapper. As with snapper on plastics, the gun retrieve seemed to be a slow lift and a jerk hereand there and let it float back down or leave it in the rod holder 4 winds off the bottom and the boat will do the rest . You want the lure to “suspend” as much as possible in the bottom zone, too close to the reef and you’ll risk snagging up, which is not something you want to see happen to expensive Japanese lures ...pretty simple ...

Reef fishing with snapper snatchers

REEDYS RIGZ  snapper flasher rigs are pre-tied fishing rigs –  They come in a range of sizes and colours, and they all incorporate circle-style hooks, tied on tough 60lb trace material in a paternoster arrangement. The key to the success of the rigs is the fish attracting material attached to the hooks Tie the swivel at one end of the Snapper Snatcher to your main line, and attach a star sinker to the other.very effective in the surf. I have caught many Australian salmon from the surf on Snapper Snatchers, and I know that fishermen who use them more regularly also catch other species like gummy sharks, reef fish, mulloway and many more fish . List of potential target species is virtually endless. Basically, any time you are fishing with bait you could increase your success rate by using Snapper Snatchers instead of just bare hooks.

snapper with reedys rigz is directly to the bottom, beneath the boat.

landbased salmon fishing melbourne

 salmon fishing  Melbounre options

Gunnamatta Surf Beach is a known haven for two of Victoria’s most targeted surf species. Australian salmon and gummy sharks frequently visit the 18.5 km of surf coastline . Many deep gutters and rocky reef systems exist in the surf zone, providing cover for all sorts of fish. For predatory fish, these ‘ locations’ are areas in which they search for food because they attract baitfish or other potential meals. From an fishermens point of view it is these locations we need to look for to find  fish.
where you park your car there are plenty of productive gutters for fishing. The car park at the Surf Life Saving Club give anglers quick and easy access to two productive gutters without having to walk too far... As you walk up over the sand dune a deep gutter to the left fishes well all season. Another gutter to the right also fishes well but is a little further to walk to. They are both deep and if fished after dark you’re a good chance of catching gummy shark......
tide is is productive at Gunnamatta and iff this coincides with the evening your chances will increase.
How to get there  At Rye, take the Dundas Street turn off and follow to the end car park Melway reference 251 F4
Gunnamatta has been very consistent There. Salmon averaging around 1kg have been the mainstay for anglers,  there have been good reports of larger fish frequenting the area...
KILCUNDA
Kilcunda Beach is another very popular surf beach providing anglers with a good supply of salmon throughout the season. There are two beaches at Kilcunda. Kilcunda Beach itself is recognised by the old trestle bridge near the car park, while Cemetery Beach is a few metres further along behind the cemetery. Both are extremely productive and usually fish well together. Both beaches are  rocky to the right hand side with deep gutters throughout...
Kilcunda Beach has two major gutters to the left and to the right. The right hand gutter has quite a rocky bottom, which you may snag up on, but the fishing is good because of this structure.
Cemetery Beach has its deepest gutter to the left hand side as you stand at the top of the  path.
These beaches, a high tide in either the evening or early morning is most productive. Anglers who fish a high tide during overcast conditions will also find success.
Follow the Bass Highway past the Phillip Island turn off at the roundabout at Anderson. About 3km past the roundabout is the Kilcunda Caravan Park, just past that on the left is the Kilcunda Beach Car . Cemetery Beach is located 100m past Kilcunda Melway reference 512 R11
Most salmon have ranged between 500g and 1.5kg. Bluebait has been the most productive bait, but some larger fish have been taking to blue surf poppers fished on a paternoster rig.

Look for gutters along the stretch of beach at Cape Woolamai. At the Surf Club, the gutter to the left is deep and productive, or alternatively the first car park called Anzacs has two gutters. There is a rocky gutter to the right (which also produces King George whiting in the summer) and another one to the left that holds salmon, trevally and mullet in the winter months. Gummy sharks can be taken all along the beach.

Snapper Fishing Rigs By Reedy’s Rigz are receiving a fair share of attention by fisho’s. I thought it was about time to explain how the fishing rig works. Snapper Flasher Rigs are pre-tied fishing rigs. They come in a range of Hook sizes and Flasher colors, but they all use circle hooks, Hand tied in a paternoster arrangement which the fishing ling strength can vary from 20lb or 30lb used for Whiting, Bream or Australian Salmon to as heavy as 60lb or 80lb leader for the bigger fish like snapper or Mulloway . The Lure Part of the fishing rig is Lumo infused flasher material attached to the top of the circle hooks and a Lumo bead that sits above each hook .The Rig is like a saibki rig but in a bigger scale the movement though jigging or the natural rocking of the boat helps lure in the fish . Reedy’s rigs can be used for surf fishing rig or fished for whiting in the smaller model Size #4. Snapper Rigs in 5/0 are , very effective in the surf. I have caught a number of Australian salmon from the surf on The Paternoster Snapper Rig , and they are fished regularly to catch other species like gummy sharks & Tailor . This is one of Best uses for Snapper rigs in Australian & New Zealand waters. They fish Very well not just for snapper but a range of fish like whiting, Mulloway , Australian Salmon the list is basically endless what they catch. if you’re fishing from the pier or out of a boat, it is best to use bait on your flasher rig. Strip of squid is a good bet , especially in the surf. Pass the hook through the strip just once, towards one end of the bait, just as you would for normal circle hooks. Once you have your Snapper Rig rigged, baited and in the water Sit back & relax you don’t need to strike the circle hooks will catch the fish , just a lift of the fishing rod once it is fully buckled should see a good hook up .
